Chase That Left Police Dog Dead Also Left Family Without Home

"The Doll House" was home to Edward and Beverly Doll for decades. Now, it's a crime scene and they can't live there.

PHOENIX, AZ – It's all a matter of perspective. For the Phoenix Police Department, Tuesday was the day that they chased suspected carjackers through downtown, ending in a crash that led to a standoff that cost Bane, a police dog, his life.

For Edward and Beverly Doll, it was their wedding anniversary. It was also the day that they saw their home of more than 40 years become the setting for the final act of that police incident. And be rendered unlivable in the process.

"Their residence was tragically destroyed as the result" of the incident, the children of the Dolls write on a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for their parents.

The incident started Tuesday morning around 10:30 when officers from the department's Street Crimes Unit saw a stolen vehicle in the area of 5100 West Broadway Road.

Police say it was driven by 27-year-old Jairo Adair Contreras Quinter and 24-year-old Laura Dagnino was his passenger.

The two fled, leading police on a chase throughout the city, allegedly stealing three cars in the process. It ended when police used a spike strip to blow out one of the tires, which caused them to crash.

The two ran out of the car – Dagnino was quickly arrested while Quinter fled into a nearby home at 27th and Bethany Home Road. Police say that he showered, stole some clothes, and when they showed up, hid in the attic.

Police sent in Bane the police dog – who died in the process – and then used gas to get Quinter out. In the process, he fell through the attic floor.

This house that he hid in was the Doll's house or "The Doll House" as the family calls it.

"Efforts to extricate him, although necessary, ended with the destruction of the Doll home and nearly all of its contents," the family writes on GoFundMe where the Doll children are raising money for their parents.

"This is an incredibly devastating time for our family. Our father has Parkinson’s and their home had always provided a safe and comforting environment."

The family asks that people donate "whatever you can – every bit helps – so we can help get them the things they need to get back on their feet as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, Dagnino is charged with armed robbery and motor vehicle theft as well as in connection with an outstanding warrant on drug charges.

Quinter is charged with killing or harming a working service animal, one count of animal cruel intentional mistreatment, armed robbery, motor vehicle theft, burglary, and other counts including in connection with an outstanding warrant for trespassing and motor vehicle theft.
