Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:
- After a heated debate, the Phoenix City Council decided to renew its contract with Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS), the region's largest homeless shelter provider. The $4.4 million contract will continue funding CASS's emergency shelter services, but with increased stipulations for transparency and city oversight. The decision comes amidst ongoing lawsuits and investigations into the city's handling of homelessness and police treatment of unhoused individuals. (The Arizona Republic)
- Semiconductor supplier Highlight Tech Corp. is set to open its new Phoenix headquarters by the end of the year, creating 60 new jobs in 2024 as it expands its operations in the U.S. market. The Taiwan-based company, known for manufacturing specialty process components and vacuum systems for high-volume semiconductor manufacturing, will initially occupy part of a warehouse on Harbour Drive in Phoenix, but is actively seeking additional space to meet its needs. HTC-America, the subsidiary of Highlight Tech Corp., will focus on sales and service of fab and sub-fab components, electro-mechanical systems, and parts. (The Business Journals)
- Phoenix is set to implement significant changes in its intersections by extending the duration of yellow lights, aiming to reduce red-light runners and enhance safety. The decision follows a comprehensive study conducted by the city's Street Transportation Department, which demonstrated that extending yellow light times led to a reduction of up to 60 percent in red-light running incidents. The implementation of these changes is expected to begin in the summer and will be gradually applied to all traffic lights within the next three years. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
