Is It A Virus Or Bacteria That's Making You Sick?
Test your knowledge of viral and bacterial infections, and then learn what you can do to help avoid getting sick.

A sore throat, a fever, a cough, a runny nose: the symptoms of viral and bacterial infections can often look similar. To determine the root cause of your illness and establish the best course of treatment, you’ll need to visit a health care professional for an evaluation — and, in some cases, you’ll need additional lab testing.
If you’re feeling under the weather, Banner Health can connect you with a doctor to help you get on the road to wellness as soon as possible. Of course, Banner Health isn’t just here for you when you’re sick, but to keep you healthy all year round. Banner Health offers a range of preventive resources and education, including information on common illnesses and tips to help you avoid getting sick.
Test your knowledge on viral and bacterial infections with the short quiz below. Then, read on for tips on how to stay healthy, no matter what illnesses are going around.
Taking this quiz is a great first step to learning about bacterial and viral infections. Here are some additional tips to help protect yourself from both:
- Stay up to date on your immunizations. The flu shot is recommended for nearly everyone six months and older, with limited exceptions. Other recommended vaccines, including the COVID-19 vaccine, will vary depending on your age and health.
- Wash your hands with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds. You should wash your hands after coming home, before preparing or eating food and any time you touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Clean and disinfect your home frequently. Pay special attention to high-touch areas — such as countertops, doorknobs and cabinet handles, computer keyboards and mice, phones, light switches and toilet handles — that can easily collect germs.
- If you have school-aged children, teach them how to avoid germs at school. Children have less-developed immune systems and are likely to be in close contact with classmates. Remind them to wash their hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes, stay away from sick classmates and avoid sharing personal items.
- Prioritize health and wellness. Getting enough sleep, staying active, eating a well-balanced diet and managing stress can help your body most effectively fight against bacterial and viral infections.
- Stay home and avoid contact with others if you are feeling sick. If you are concerned about any symptoms, see a health care professional.
