John McCain Has Surgery, Hospitalized As Cancer Fight Continues
Senator McCain's office says the he needed surgery to treat an intestinal infection related to diverticulitis. He is in stable condition.

PHOENIX, AZ – A slight obstacle on Sen. John McCain's road to recovery. McCain, who has been fighting an aggressive form of brain cancer, was hospitalized over the weekend so that surgeons could operate on an intestinal infection related to diverticulitis.
His office released a statement saying that he is in stable condition at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix.
"Senator McCain and his family are grateful to the senator’s excellent care team, and appreciate the support and prayers they continue to receive from people all over the country," the statement said.

McCain has been back in Arizona, resting in his home in Cornville outside of Sedona. (Get Phoenix Patch's daily newsletter and real-time news alerts. Or, find your local Patch here and subscribe).
His office says that he regularly receives physical therapy as he fights the side effects from the cancer treatments.

"He has remained engaged on his work as Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and has enjoyed frequent visits from his family, friends, staff and Senate colleagues," McCain's office said.
McCain's daughter, Meghan, released a statement saying that her dad, "continues to inspire me everyday with his intense grit and determination." She also thanked the doctors who treated her dad and "everyone who is praying for him."
Last week, a reporter from Bloomberg apparently misunderstood a conversation with McCain's number two on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Jim Inhofe (R-OK), and reported that McCain would be back at work in Washington in early May.
Inhofe's office issued a clarification saying that no date has been set for McCain's return.
