Mall Shooting Comes 5 Days After Arizona Stay-Home Order Expires

A year-to-year comparison from Bloomberg shows the number of mass shootings in the U.S. declined 24 percent since COVID-19 lockdowns.

GLENDALE, ARIZ. — Three people were shot Wednesday night by a gunman wielding an AR-15 at the Westgate Entertainment District, home to Arizona’s Cardinals football and Coyotes hockey, investigators said. The suspect claimed to be "getting back at society" in widely circulated Snapchat video both before the shooting and after.

Here’s what we know so far.

Around 7:30 p.m. social media posts surfaced from the scene.

Social media posts from witnesses circulated Twitter and other popular social media networks claiming there was an active shooter at the shopping center.

State Sen. Martin Quezada, who is a gun-reform advocate, was one witness of the shooting.

The shooter’s mother identified him as Armando Junior Hernandez.

He is a 20-year-old graduate of Raymond Kellis High School in Glendale, part of the Peoria Unified School District, according to the New York Post.

The shooter live-streamed his attack on Snapchat.

Snapchat and other social media networks have since removed the video, but it’s still available to view online.

The Snapchat story starts with photos of the AR-15 police say was used in the shooting, then selfies showing the suspect holding the gun and wearing a camouflage face mask.

Before the videos of the actual shooting, the suspect says:

“Hello, my name’s Armando Junior Hernandez and I’m gonna be the shooter of Westgate 2020.”

The video shows the suspect walking through the shopping center and approaching a woman laying on the ground.

Hernandez surrendered to police when they arrived on the scene.

“We were able to locate that suspect in the Westgate area, our officers challenged that suspect and were able to safely take that person into custody,” Glendale police representative Tiffany Ngalula said in a media briefing. There is also video footage of Hernandez getting on his knees in surrender as police arrived at the scene.

There were three victims of the shooting.

According to a tweet from Glendale Police Thursday morning, there were three gunshot victims. One person is in critical condition, another was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and a third was treated at the scene, but not hospitalized.

There was a power outage at the same time as the shooting.

Ngalula said Wednesday that it is “not clear if the outage was related.”

The motive is unknown.

Investigators haven't said anything about a motive. The Glendale Police department is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other intelligence agencies.
