John McCain Doesn't Want President Trump At His Funeral: NYT

The New York Times quotes "intimates" of McCain who say that the senator does not want the president at his funeral, preferring Mike Pence.

PHOENIX, AZ – Showing that some grudges continue beyond life, Sen. John McCain apparently does not want President Donald Trump to attend his funeral. The New York Times says that "intimates" of the senator have informed the White House of this.

The two have been feuding since 2015 when Trump – who was campaigning at the time – said McCain was "a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."

The Times reports these "intimates" have told the White House that Vice President Mike Pence will be welcome at the funeral, which is currently scheduled to be held at Washington's National Cathedral.

McCain has been at his ranch outside of Sedona since mid-December battling an aggressive form of brain cancer. (Get Phoenix Patch's daily newsletter and real-time news alerts. Or, find your local Patch here and subscribe).

McCain also famously returned to Washington last year to walk on to the Senate floor and cast a thumbs-down no vote on a Republican attempt to repeal Obamacare. That has led to a steady stream of continued ridicule from the president.

In McCain's new book, "The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciations," which comes out May 22, McCain does not have kind words for Trump.

"He has declined to distinguish the actions of our government from the crimes of despotic ones," McCain writes. "The appearance of toughness, or a reality show facsimile of toughness, seems to matter more than any of our values."

On Friday, Patch reported that McCain's daughter, Meghan, had returned home to Arizona to be with her family.

In his book, McCain also reflects on death and the life that he has led.

"The world is a fine place and worth fighting for and I hate very much to leave it," he quotes his hero, Robert Jordan from Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls."

"I do, too," writes McCain, "I hate to leave it. But I don't have a complaint. Not one. It's been quite a ride. I've known great passions, seen amazing wonders, fought in a war, and helped make a peace.

"I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times."
