Memorial Day 2022: What's Open, Closed In The Phoenix Area

PHOENIX, AZ — Many businesses, services, agencies and government offices in Phoenix and other Valley communities will be closed for the holiday on Monday.

Memorial Day is a holiday people throughout Arizona and across the country look forward to every year as time to take a break and gather with friends and family, but the holiday also gives people a chance to remember all American lives lost during military service.

Phoenix, Tempe and Scottsdale city offices will all be closed on Monday. Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe trash pickup will continue on its normal schedule. Courthouses, libraries and Maricopa County offices will also be closed.

Banks and post offices are always closed for Memorial Day, and mail will not be delivered.

What's open, closed in the Phoenix area on Memorial Day

  • Valley Metro will operate on a Sunday schedule with no RAPID or express bus service.
  • Tempe Transit will also operate on a Sunday schedule.
  • Tempe's 311 Information line will be closed.
  • Phoenix public pools will be open.
  • Kiwanis Recreation Center in Tempe will be open from noon to 6 p.m. and the pool will be open from 1-5 p.m. The Tennis Center will be open from noon to 6 p.m.
  • The Kiwanis Park Batting Range in Tempe will be closed.
  • Escalante Pool in Tempe will be open from 1-5 p.m.
  • McClintock Pool in Tempe will be open 5-9 p.m.
  • The Cloud at Kiwanis Park, Esquer Park Splash Pad, Hudson Park Splash Pad and Jaycee Park Splash Pad will be open from 8 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Cactus Aquatic and Fitness Center in Scottsdale will be open holiday hours from 2-5 p.m.

Businesses

  • Big Lots: Stores will be open on Memorial Day during regular store hours from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • Costco: Warehouses are closed on Memorial Day.
  • CVS: All stores will be open regular hours (some stores are open 24 hours). Check local store hours
  • Fry's: All stores will be open regular hours. Check local store hours
  • Home Depot: Stores are generally open regular hours for Memorial Day, 6 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Kohl’s: Stores are typically open regular hours on Memorial Day. That’s 10 a.m. to 10 pm. for most stores.
  • Lowe’s: Open for regular store hours on Memorial Day.
  • Macy’s: Open during regular Monday hours, which are typically 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Safeway: Most stores will be open regular hours from 5 a.m. to midnight. Pharmacy hours may vary by location. Check local store hours
  • Starbucks: Most stores will be open for Memorial Day, but hours vary by location. Check local store hours
  • Target: Most stores will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Memorial Day weekend. Check local store hours
  • Trader Joe’s: Stores will be open regular hours on Memorial Day. Check local store hours
  • Walgreens: Stores and pharmacies will be open regular hours, but vary by location. Check local store hours
  • Walmart: Stores will be open regular hours. Check local store hours
  • Whole Foods: Stores will be open regular hours for the holiday. Check local store hours

    Remembering veterans who died while in military service in late May dates back to 1868, when Gen. John A. Logan called for a day of remembrance to honor the Northern lives lost amid battle during the Civil War that had ended just a few years earlier. Logan called it "Decoration Day," which it was known as for several years. As time passed, more and more people called it Memorial Day, and it became a federal holiday in 1971.

    Until World War I, Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, was only meant to honor those who died while fighting for the union in the Civil War, as Southern states honored their war dead on a separate day. After the 116,000-plus American deaths in World War I, the holiday took on a new role to remember all who have died while serving in the military.

    Every year, a national moment of remembrance is held at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. The midday time was chosen "because it is the time when many Americans are enjoying their freedoms on the national holiday," according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
