Phoenix: A Capital City With So Much To Love

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Phoenix so special.

Phoenix is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Phoenix has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Phoenix is one of the sunniest places in the world, with an average of more than 300 sunny days per year. But did you know that the city also has a monsoon season? From mid-June to late September, Phoenix experiences heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, making it a great time to visit outdoor attractions like the Desert Botanical Garden.
  • While Phoenix boasts a beautiful desert landscape, it’s also home to the United States’ largest urban park. At 16,000 acres, the South Mountain Park and Preserve is the perfect place to go with family and friends to picnic, hike and enjoy scenic views of the city.
  • Phoenix is home to the Heard Museum, which is dedicated to the art and culture of Native American peoples. The museum has a collection of over 42,000 artifacts and hosts rotating exhibitions throughout the year.
  • Phoenix has a rich history, and one of the best ways to learn about it is by visiting the Pueblo Grande Museum. The museum is built around an ancient Hohokam village, and visitors can explore the ruins and learn about the people who lived there more than 1,000 years ago.
  • Phoenix is known for its hot weather, but did you know that the city also has a thriving ice skating scene? The CityScape Ice Rink is open during the winter months and offers public skating, ice hockey leagues and lessons. Grab your skates and enjoy the cool breeze in the midst of the hot city.
  • Phoenix is home to the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world. The Taliesin West, located in the city's foothills, was Wright's winter home and studio, and it is now open for tours. Visitors can see the architecture up close and learn about Wright's life and work.
  • Phoenix has a vibrant arts scene, and one of the best places to experience it is at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. The museum features contemporary art from around the world and hosts rotating exhibitions throughout the year.
  • Phoenix is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, and one of the best ways to experience them is by visiting the Tonto National Forest. The forest is home to several hiking trails, and visitors can also camp, fish, and see wildlife.
  • Phoenix is home to the Phoenix Zoo, one of the largest zoos in the country. The zoo has more than 3,000 animals from around the world and is open year-round. Visitors can see elephants, giraffes, lions, and many other animals in a naturalistic setting.
