PHOENIX, AZ — A man involved in a hit-and-run accident in Phoenix tried to stab a witness who followed him from the crash scene, police said. Just after 10 p.m. Oct. 14, Ernesto Otanez Oveso, 28, ran a red light while driving a 2007 Jeep Renegade east on Indian School Road. At the same time, a 27-year-old woman was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Cruz south on 53rd Avenue. After the two cars collided in the intersection, Oveso and a woman in his car ran away from the scene.

A 25-year-old man who saw the crash drove after Oveso and the woman. Oveso told the man to stop following him and then pulled out a knife and started jabbing a knife at the man through his car window. But the man and a woman in his car were able to drive off uninjured.

Oveso later was arrested and identified as the hit-and-run driver and as the man from the attempted stabbing. Officers also found a handgun in the car Oveso was driving, a crime since Oveso is an accused felon. Police also found Oveso had three misdemeanor warrants and one felony warrant out for his arrest.
