Phoenix Holiday Schedule Changes: Trash, Transit, City Offices

City of Phoenix employees will enjoy Christmas and New Year's too, bringing changes to trash, transit, city offices and library schedules.

PHOENIX, AZ — Similar to other Phoenix residents who will enjoy Christmas Day and New Year’s Day with loved ones at holiday gatherings while indulging in festive holiday food and drink, City of Phoenix employees will have Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 off from work too. Here are more details on how city services will be affected for the holidays:

Trash And Recycling Collection

The regularly scheduled trash and recycling collection for Phoenix residents will not occur on Dec. 25 or Jan. 1:

  • Those with a regular Wednesday collection day will now have their trash and recycling picked up on Thursday both weeks.
  • Those with regular Thursday and Friday collection days will have services delayed by one day both weeks too.
  • City of Phoenix officials advise that the recycling and trash containers should be set out by 5:30 a.m. and be placed 4 feet apart.

Transfer Stations

The North Gateway and 27th Avenue transfer stations will close at noon on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day and Jan. 1.

Public Transit

On Dec. 24, the light rail, Dial-a-Ride and buses will run on their regular schedule. On Christmas Day, buses will follow a Sunday schedule, and the light rail will run a 24-minute schedule. Transit customer service is open Christmas Eve 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. but will be closed on Christmas Day.

On New Year’s Eve, the light rail will operate according to a 24-minute schedule, while city buses will run on a normal schedule. However, on New Year’s Eve from 7 p.m. until the service day ends, rides on light rail, buses, Dial-a-Ride and paratransit are free. Transit customer service is open Dec. 31, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will be closed all day Jan. 1.

Phoenix Government Offices

City of Phoenix offices will close Christmas Eve at noon and will remain closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Phoenix Public Libraries

Every Phoenix public library is open Christmas Eve 9 a.m. to noon and all are closed on Christmas Day. On New Year’s Eve, all city libraries are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All City of Phoenix libraries are closed on Jan. 1.

Parking Meters

All parking meters inside the city will be enforced 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, including holidays and weekends.
