Phoenix Pedestrian In Critical Condition After Saving Other Kids

A 16-year-old Phoenix pedestrian in a crosswalk with three other kids pushed them out of the way before he was struck by an oncoming car.

PHOENIX, AZ — Three kids are safe while a fourth lies in a hospital in critical condition after pushing the others out of the path of the car that struck him. Wednesday about 8:20 p.m. at Central Avenue and Roeser Road, a 16-year-old boy walked east in the Roeser Road crosswalk with an 11-year-old girl, a 4-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl, in time with the walk signal.

However, at the same time, a 2011 Dodge Challenger driven by a 20-year-old man was headed west on Roeser and attempted to turn left onto south Central Avenue without yielding. The 16-year-old saw the collision coming and pushed the three girls out of the car’s path before he was hit by the vehicle. One of the girls was struck but not injured. But the 16-year-old was seriously injured and taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The Challenger driver, who stayed at the accident’s scene, told police he thought he had a green light and made his left turn as no traffic was coming. The driver also said he hadn’t seen the children in the crosswalk.
