PHOENIX — Incumbent Republican Rep. David Schweikert is pulling ahead of Democrat Dr. Hiral Tipirneni in a very tight race to hold onto his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Schweikert represents the very red sixth congressional district in Maricopa County, encompassing parts of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Cave Creek and Fountain Hills. But ethics violations could cost him his seat, according to some election experts.

These are the results as of 8 a.m. Monday:

The first batch of results are from early voters and mail-in ballots. Election Day votes will be reported throughout the night.

In July, Schweikert admitted to 11 ethics violations involving misuse of funds and was reprimanded by the House, receiving a $50,000 fine. He has served in the sixth district since 2013 and in the fifth district from 2011 to 2013.

He is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, and has made low taxes a focal point of his political career. He is also a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, which is chaired by Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz.

Tipirneni is an emergency medical doctor and cancer research advocate with no previous political experience. She previously ran against Republican Rep. Debbie Lesko in 2018 but her bid was unsuccessful.

"My opponent, on the other hand, spent his time in Congress serving his corporate backers and party bosses, not the people of this district," she told Patch in a profile. "I'll arrive in Washington ready to protect healthcare, make the tax code more fair for working families and small businesses, and root out all forms of corruption."

Schweikert declined to participate in a debate co-hosted by AZPBS (Channel 8), The Arizona Republic and KJZZ-FM, so the two have never met face-to-face to discuss policy.

Ballot counting had already started but the first round of results weren't released until 8 p.m., one hour after the polls close, per Arizona law.

Election officials have warned voters that due to an influx of early voting and a rule on the books that gives all voters five business days to fix issues with their ballot signatures, the final election tally won't be available until Nov. 10. If they're close, Arizona races might not be called on Election Night.

The race has not yet been called and the vote count is ongoing.
