Tuesday Benefit Aids Family Of Detention Officer Killed By Inmate

A BBQ Benefit Tuesday in Phoenix aids the family of Maricopa County Detention Officer Gene Lee, who was attacked and killed by an inmate.

PHOENIX, AZ — In the aftermath of Detention Officer Gene Lee’s sudden death Oct. 30 after being attacked by a prisoner at the Lower Buckeye Jail in Phoenix Oct. 29, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is holding a fundraiser Tuesday to benefit Lee’s family.

Community members are invited to attend a Benefit BBQ fundraiser for Officer Lee's family, held at the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association’s office at 1102 W. Adams St. in Phoenix on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Hotdogs, hamburgers, chips and more will be served, and all money raised will go to Officer Lee’s family.

A procession was held Saturday as Lee’s body was moved from the Banner Health Medical Center to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to a sheriff’s office spokesperson, details of the attack haven’t been released “due to the complexities of the investigation and out of respect to family members.”
