Phoenix Brewery Gives Uncle Bunky His Own Beer
The obituary of an Arizona version of Hunter S. Thompson (minus the journalism and politics) went viral, now he's getting his own brew.
“Some may never live, but the crazy never die.”
— Hunter S. Thompson
PHOENIX — Last week an obituary of an Arizona man went viral and now azcentral.com reports that the man, Randall "Uncle Bunky" Jacobs, will be "immortalized" with a beer made in his honor from O.H.S.O. Brewery.
"Uncle Bunky burned the candle, and whatever else was handy, at both ends. He spoke in a gravelly patois of wisecracks, mangled metaphors, and inspired profanity that reflected the Arizona dive bars, Colorado ski slopes, and various dodgy establishments where he spent his days and nights. He was a living, breathing "hang loose" sign, a swaggering hybrid of Zoni desert rat, SoCal hobo, and Telluride ski bum." — Chris Santa Maria
The obituary eloquently summarizes a life lived on the edge, beyond the grasp of societal norms and free of expectations. A photo of the printed obituary in the Arizona Republic was shared across Twitter, Instagram and Reddit. It received thousands of upvotes, retweets, likes and shares.
The story of Jacobs' legacy was told by his nephew, Chris Santa Maria, an artist living in Brooklyn. When the story went viral, Santa Maria took to Twitter to share some more memories of his favorite uncle.

One of the last things he ever said to me, as we drank and smoked in the desert heat:
“I’m ready for the dirt nap, little buddy, but you can’t leave the party if you can’t find the door.” https://t.co/0YOoTnJ5kc

that summer he pulled out a sawed-off shotgun from the trunk of his sled and told me it was "hot" (I had no idea what that meant) and then proceeded to play Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" while we emptied a buckshot’s gunpowder on the ground and lit it on fire
it was insane

on my last day of 4th grade, before my folks got home from work, he played me a cassette of Alice Cooper’s “School's Out” on my boombox and then we shot a potato out of a homemade pvc pipe cannon fueled by Krylon fumes

one time he tried to pick me up from elementary school in his shitty 70's era Buick LeSabre (a.k.a. The Sled) by revving the engine and hollering expletives out the window
the kids were so terrified, they asked a teacher to make sure I wasn't getting kidnapped

when I was in art school Bunky would egg me on that if I ever left Arizona I would get a show on "that island" and now here we are https://t.co/zoGckaQ4Ht
