Here are the top three stories in Phoenix today:

  1. Despite the closure of trails due to excessive heat warnings, the Phoenix Fire Department had to rescue an overheated hiker on the Echo Canyon trail of Camelback Mountain over the weekend. The hiker, an adult female, was located approximately a half mile from the trailhead and was unable to safely walk down. The rescue team utilized a hoist operation and a rescue helicopter to remove her from the trail and she was subsequently transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. (KTAR.com)
  2. During a police shooting in Phoenix on Saturday, a suspect was killed, and two officers were injured and hospitalized. The incident occurred after police responded to a burglary report at a storage unit facility and encountered a man and a woman matching the description. As the officers attempted to identify the individuals, the male suspect resisted arrest and attempted to grab an officer's taser, leading to the officer firing their gun. The woman was arrested for an unrelated warrant, while the identity of the deceased suspect has not been revealed. The investigation is ongoing, and a section of Washington Street remains closed as of Jul. 2. (Arizona's Family)
  3. Due to staff shortages, only 15 community swimming pools in Phoenix will be open as temperatures soar to dangerous levels. With an Excessive Heat Warning that was in effect for the entire area, temperatures reached around 114 degrees over the weekend. The City of Phoenix cites the inability to hire enough pool managers and lifeguards as the reason for the limited pool openings, as each pool requires a manager to ensure safety and handle emergencies.
