🌱 Griner Shoe Drive + SUSD Language Program + Construction Rescue

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Scottsdale.

(Patch Media)

Hello, everybody! Let's get this Wednesday started off right, with a quick review of everything you need to know.

But, before we get into it, I need to issue a correction to yesterday's newsletter. In a story about catalytic converter theft in Scottsdale, the name Midas in Midas Garage was misspelt. Please note the correct spelling is Midas Garage. The newsletter originally left the "s" off the words Midas.

Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:

  1. Tuesday afternoon, crews from Scottsdale, Phoenix, Glendale, and Tempe fire departments rescued an injured construction worker off the roof of a Scottsdale building. The man's identity and condition have not yet been released, but fire crews say the his leg was broken and that he was lifted from the building in a rescue basket. After the rescue he was taken to the hospital. (Arizona's Family)
  2. As the community waits for news on whether Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner can return safely back to the U.S., the Scottsdale community is keeping her foundation, BG’s Heart and Sole Shoe Drive, active. FirstBank, in partnership with Phoenix Rescue Mission and BG’s Heart and Sole Shoe, is collecting shoe donations at all its locations — three of which are in Scottsdale. Griner's organization was founded in 2016 and continues to help community members in need. If you have old shoes, or new shoes, laying around unused, consider swinging by FirstBank's local branches to donate. You can click here to find a branch close to you. (Press Release; information can also be found at Valley Independent).
  3. Pueblo Elementary School's dual-language program is proving successful. First started in 2015-2016, the program immerses students in English and Spanish starting in kindergarten, when their science and math classes are in Spanish. By the fifth grade, they have mastered science and math in Spanish and switch to math in English, while social studies is taught in Spanish. Other schools in Scottsdale have optional language immersion programs, such as Desert Canyon Elementary's Mandarin program, although at Pueblo the program is unique in its being required. (Scottsdale Progress)
  4. According to WalletHub's new study, Scottsdale is among the list of cities with the highest credit card debt payoff. In fact, Scottsdale ranks 10th out of 182 for decreasing both household credit card debt and overall credit card debt. (WalletHub)
