Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:

  1. This morning a pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Camelback Road near Miller Avenue. The identities of neither the driver nor victim have been released, but the driver was arrested at the scene on DUI-related charges. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
  2. After being signed into legislation, the 2022 Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act will soon be enforceable by tribal governments. Although next steps are to be solidified in October, an ordinance did go into effect at the beginning of May allowing the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to prosecute non-Native offenders for domestic violence and order-of-protection violations, so long as the defendant has appropriate ties to the community. Future additions and expansions to the legislation will even allow SRPMICcourts to prosecute child violence, sex trafficking, and sexual assault. (O'odham Action News)
  3. Former Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel will be remembered Monday afternoon in a memorial service at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Adel, who was the first women elected to County Attorney, died on Sunday due to health complications. She was 45 years old. Adel is remembered for her "dedication to philanthropy and community service." (The Arizona Republic)
  4. Scottsdale police heroically reunited a quail family after six baby chicks became trapped in a Scottsdale irrigation vault. Police responded after a 911 call reported strange sounds from the vault. Using a towel and webbing, the babies were rescued, returned to their mother, and released into the desert. (Arizona's Family)
  5. Looking to adopt a furry friend? Then head over to the Arizona Humane Society before May 15 to benefit from waived adoption fees! The Bissell Pet Foundation, Arizona Animal Welfare League, and the Arizona Humane Society are sponsoring the Empty the Shelters initiative in an effort to alleviate overcrowding in animal shelters. The Initiative has helped 83,000 pets across the country find forever homes. (Patch)
