Before Major League Baseball players take the field, many attend the MLB’s invitation-only Draft Combine. Held about a month before the draft, this multi-day event gathers top draft-eligible players to showcase their skills through medical exams, strength and conditioning tests, on-field workouts, and team interviews. It's a joint effort between USA Baseball and all 30 MLB teams to evaluate top high school and college talent from across the country.

Although the MLB Draft began in 1965, the first Combine took place in 2021 at USA Baseball’s headquarters in North Carolina. It moved to San Diego in 2022 and has been held at Chase Field in Phoenix since 2023. This year’s Combine ran from June 17 to 21 and featured 322 players, with live coverage on MLB Network.

For the past three years, Dan and Jessica Swinscoe – a father-daughter team from Train2Win Rehab and Performance in Scottsdale – have been part of the expert evaluation staff. They assess each player’s motor control using the Y Balance Test, which evaluates single-leg balance and movement in three planes. Results are shared with all 30 MLB teams, USA Baseball, and each athlete.

The Swinscoes began working together in Seattle in 2020 before relocating to Arizona. Their expertise in the Y Balance Test and Functional Movement Screen has made them regulars at the Combine and valuable resources for their everyday clients. As Dan puts it, “Getting people out of pain is easy. Keeping them out of pain and performing at their best is the real challenge. These tests help ensure we are challenging people in the best way to rehab and progress them as fast as possible, but also safely.”

Jessica adds, “These tools reveal imbalances that might be missed in a traditional exam. They help us reduce pain, prevent injuries, and improve performance.”
