Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:

  1. Pac-12 baseball is coming to Scottsdale! The inaugural tournament takes place May 25 – 29 at Scottsdale Stadium, where Spring Training is held. Tickets are currently available for the double elimination college tournament. Get your tickets fast, as the Scottsdale Stadium's capacity is only 12,000. (Press Release Desk)
  2. As the Scottsdale Daily previously reported, the Scottsdale Sustainability Plan workshop was held on May 16 and 17. Major ideas that came from the public forum are: improving Scottsdale's urban forest, building more affordable housing, and making downtown more walkable. Affordability, in terms of water, rent, and general cost of living, was another hot topic among the 30 participants at the May 16 workshop. Read more about what residents had to say by clicking the link. (Scottsdale Progress)
  3. The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community officially broke ground on a new “Building the Future of Housing” housing initiative earlier this month. The Lonely Cactus Expansion Rentals features six new units in a “triplex” layout and will serve SRPMIC seniors and people with disabilities first. MayDall Construction, owned by a SRPMIC member, is completing construction. (O'odham Action News)
  4. Planning on hitting up one of Scottsdale's famous nightclubs? If so, then leave your designer basketball sneakers home! Many nightclubs in Scottsdale are banning high-end retro sneakers, specifically Jordans and Nike Air Force 1s. Club owners claim the ban is to maintain a certain vibe, while bouncers claim patrons are protective over their designer basketball sneakers, and altercations have occurred as a result. Valley residents, however, question the seemingly arbitrary rule as clubs often encourage other high-end fashion statements, including shoes. Patrons have been raised at the racist implications of banning shoes, as the footwear is especially popular among Black club-goers. (Scottsdale Progress)
  5. The Scottsdale farmers market is back in Old Town until June 25. In case you missed the May 7 opening, know you can head down to Old Town every Saturday to support over 100 local growers and specialty food producers. The market, in its 13th year, is family and pet friendly. Additionally, DUFB/SNAP are accepted as well as AZFMNP and Senior program. (Patch)
