Here are the top stories today in Scottsdale:

  1. In 2019, Officer Nathan Stephenson of the Scottsdale Police Department caused an accident on east McDowell Road and north 74th Street that impacted four other drivers. On May 17 of this year, one of the drivers, Robert Kirkwood, reached a settlement with the City and received $75,000 for the cost of medical bills, which allegedly reached $114,000, and property damage to the vehicle. Last year, another driver effected by the accident also received settlement money. (Subscription: Daily Independent, Free: NewsBreak)
  2. The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community WIC Program has a new, permanent location at the River People Health Center. The drive-thru event on April 29, meant to spread the word of the new location, went off without a hitch. Those who came were given cookbooks, cooking utensils, T-shirts, and a healthy snack by WIC staff. The new location is near the highway, which staff hopes will ease accessibility when in-person appointments resume over the next few months. (O'odham Action News)
  3. June Days are coming back to Old Town! After a successful first year, the month of events, activities, and performances are heading back to the Valley.   4. As the year comes to a close, the School of Rock Scottsdale is waving off its senior students. But before heading to law school, one student, Gus Campbell, is curating a show centered around George Clinton. Campbell hopes be part of a shift at the School of Rock in which Black history and Black musicians are more prominently celebrated. The music education program has been training young musicians since 2002, and has served Arizona since 2012. (Scottsdale Progress)
  5. Lifted Trucks, a specialty used auto dealer, expanded its Valley operations by adding a Scottsdale location. The Phoenix-based company now serves Scottsdale residents at 1101 N Scottsdale Road, and has plans to expand into Tucson and eventually into Dallas, Texas. Founded in 1995, Lifted Trucks as over 120 total employees, 75 vehicles at its new location, and was named "Rookie of the Year" at the Business Journal's 2021 Arizona Corporate Excellence awards.   • "The average cost of a gallon of gas in Maricopa County is now over $5 per gallon, according to AAA." (Patch)
  • In March, Morehouse College invited a group of Indigenous aerosol artists from across Arizona e to spend a week on its campus in Atlanta, Georgia. Seven of the artists came from Neoglyphix, and aerosol artists’ collective founded by Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community member Dwayne Manuel. While in Atlanta, the artists created a mural and fostered dialogue about Native and African American cultures. (O'odham Action News)

  • As part of Scottsdale Water's commitment to saving at least 5 percent more water this year, the division has contracted with a company to recycle water during water main and hydrant flushing. This can save more than 300,000 gallons of water per day! (City of Scottsdale, Facebook)
  • Arizona has the third highest rate of job resignation in the U.S.! With a 4.20% resignation rate in the last month, and 3.33% in the last 12 months, Arizona is only behind Alaska and Florida. (WalletHub)
