Here are the top stories today in Scottsdale:

  1. After voting in favor of a district-wide mask mandate, four Scottsdale Unified School District board members face recall petitions. Zach Lindsay, the fifth board member, did not receive a petition — he was also the only one to vote against the mask mandate. The petition spoke to what parents see as a decline in SUSD education, worsening student mental health, and violation of parental rights. (Scottsdale Patch)
  2. Heading out? Then you need to know about the new Valley Metro Plan & Track transit rider app — which aims to help ease the daily commute. Valley Metro, in partnership with the City of Phoenix and Vix Technology, released this replacement for Ridekick as part of the fare modernization project. (Press Release Desk)
  3. Hiking trails at Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak are restricted today through Friday due to dangerous levels of heat in Scottsdale, Phoenix, and much of the Valley. The Excessive Heat Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. today until 8 p.m. on Friday. (ABC15 Arizona)
  4. Scottsdale lawyer, Darius Amiri, helped a young interpreter escape Afghanistan. After marching alongside U.S. military forces in the fight against the Taliban, Zabi found himself stuck in Afghanistan, fearing for his life, as Taliban forces retook control of the country. Amiri, an immigration attorney with the Rose Law Group successfully secured Zabi's extradition from the country — with help from U.S. Marines at the Kabul Airport. (FOX 10 News Phoenix)
