📰 News we're reading

1. Suspected Tempe Marketplace shooter indicted. See the charges (azcentral.com) — A man has been indicted on first-degree murder and armed robbery charges in connection with a deadly shooting during an alleged gun-sale robbery at Tempe Marketplace. Investigators say surveillance footage, license plate readers and online messages tied the suspect to the incident, and Tempe police report the case remains under active investigation for any additional suspects.

2. ASU researchers developing single drop blood test (azfamily.com) — ASU researchers in Tempe are developing a low-cost blood test that can spot specific diseases like COVID, Lyme, and Ebola in about 15 minutes from a single drop of blood. The team stresses their peer-reviewed science distinguishes it from Theranos-style promises, and they hope to roll the technology out within a few years, including to rural and underserved communities.

3. Political Notebook: Prosecutors reject threat case against Tucson fundraiser (tucson.com) — Tempe residents may be interested that prosecutors declined to charge a Tucson fundraiser Tempe police had arrested over a social-media post on Councilmember Randy Keating’s Facebook page, saying there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction. The case led to a canceled Tempe council meeting, an evacuation, and a broader investigation that the woman now says damaged her career and reputation.

4. Thousands of driverless taxis recalled after they don't recognize school bus stop signs (pennlive.com) — Waymo’s self-driving taxis, including those seen operating in Tempe, are under federal scrutiny after more than 3,000 vehicles were recalled for a software fix tied to illegally passing stopped school buses. Federal regulators cite multiple incidents in Texas and Georgia and say similar problems may be widespread as they continue investigating the safety of the company’s driverless fleet.

5. Community rallies around Basha HS football coach after home destroyed in fire (abc15.com) — Tempe readers are hearing how the community is stepping up after Basha High School football coach Tim Kelly lost his Chandler home in a recent fire. A GoFundMe has already raised tens of thousands to help the longtime teacher and coach, his family, and their two German Shepherds get resettled after safely escaping the blaze.
