TEMPE, AZ — In March, the City of Tempe voted unanimously to make Juneteenth —June 19 — an official annual city holiday.

The holiday, which commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S., will be celebrated Sunday and observed Monday in Tempe.

The holiday is on June 19th because on that date in 1865, a Union general arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African-Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended.
