📰 News we're reading

1. Don't toss that tree: Tucson's TreeCycle Program turns Christmas trees into mulch (kgun9.com) — Tucson residents can recycle their Christmas trees through the city’s TreeCycle program from December 26 to January 19 at 10 drop-off sites across Pima County. Strip all decorations and stands first, then trees are turned into mulch and compost instead of going to the landfill. Note that curbside pickup isn’t available, so neighbors are encouraged to “tree pool.”

2. Project Blue developers close on purchase of Pima County land for Tucson data center (tucsonsentinel.com) — Developers of the controversial Project Blue data center have officially closed on Pima County land on Tucson’s Southeast Side, moving the massive project forward despite city opposition and the loss of Amazon as the original customer. The deal includes a $15 million community donation pledge and a renewable energy commitment, while neighbors still face questions about power use, water, jobs, and long-term impacts on Tucson’s infrastructure.

3. Tucson officer appeals after judge hands down mixed ruling (kvoa.com) — A federal court in Tucson has issued a mixed ruling in the civil case over Officer Ryan Remington’s fatal shooting of a man in a mobility scooter, allowing excessive force and wrongful death claims to go to trial. The judge dismissed ADA-related claims against the City of Tucson, while Remington is appealing the denial of qualified immunity.

4. Pope Leo XIV appoints Monsignor James Misko as bishop of Tucson (thecatholictelegraph.com) — Tucson’s Catholic community will soon welcome a new leader, as Pope Leo XIV has appointed Monsignor James A. Misko of the Diocese of Austin to serve as the next bishop of Tucson. The 55-year-old, bilingual priest brings extensive parish and diocesan leadership experience and will succeed Bishop Edward Weisenburger, who was recently named archbishop of Detroit.

5. Generations come together to celebrate Christmas on Northside (kgun9.com) — A Tucson senior living community on the north side hosted a Christmas celebration that paired local children with “grandfriends” for crafts, cookies, and companionship. Organizers say these intergenerational visits help combat seniors’ loneliness while teaching kids empathy, and they’re already planning similar Tucson gatherings for Valentine’s Day and beyond.
