TUCSON, AZ — A fatal hit and run incident occurred Saturday slightly after midnight when 40-year-old pedestrian Robyn Gmyrek was hit by not one but two cars. The first vehicle struck her after it passed southbound through the intersection at N. 1st Ave. and E. Kelso St. The driver stopped immediately and attempted to render aid. The struck woman, who had tried to cross the intersection on 1st Avenue westbound, was not in a crosswalk and lay about 50 feet south of the intersection. Shortly after the first car hit Gmyrek, a second vehicle headed southbound struck the woman but fled without stopping. Tucson Fire also attempted to aid the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The first driver, whose car is a 2016 Mazda passenger vehicle, stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers. Police determined the Mazda driver didn’t show any signs of impairment, and excessive speed was not a factor. It is unknown if speed played a part in the second collision, and police are searching for information on the hit-and-run driver and vehicle. Anyone who can provide information about this incident is requested to call 88-CRIME. Tipsters can stay anonymous.

The rate of pedestrian fatalities so far this year in Tucson has risen about 30 percent as compared to the whole of 2018, TPD reports.
