Supervisors Say No To Under-21 Nicotine Ban
Pima County Supervisors Tuesday did not approve a proposed ordinance to ban nicotine sales to those younger than 21.
TUCSON, AZ – Tabled from an Aug. 6 meeting, Pima County Supervisors Tuesday once again faced the challenge of voting on a proposed nicotine-purchasing ban for Pima County youth under age 21. The measure was defeated as supervisors Sharon Bronson, Steve Christy and Ally Miller voted against it.
The vote was delayed from the Aug. 6 Supervisors meeting because of issues surrounding penalties to business owners and the methods used to ready the ordinance for Supervisor voting. The ordinance was redrafted earlier in September, softening penalties on retailers who would still sell to nicotine buyers under age 21. Retailer permit suspensions under the revised ordinance draft would occur on the fourth violation, a penalty-slackening revision that motivated the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society to withdraw their support.
