Tucson ‘Sanctuary City’ Measure Approved For November Ballot

Tucson's controversial 'sanctuary city' initiative will appear on November's ballot, after the City Council's vote yesterday.

TUCSON, AZ — Tucson voters will see the controversial “sanctuary city” initiative on their ballots come November, thanks to the Tucson City Council’s vote Tuesday night. If approved by voters, the measure would make Tucson the state’s first sanctuary city.

Because the initiative’s proponents collected 12,400 signatures, about 3,100 more than required for appearance on the ballot, the city council was required to approve the initiative’s appearance on the ballot in November.

The initiative grants more protections for illegal U.S. residents, such as blocking specified cooperation between federal and city agencies and not allowing Tucson police to question immigration status.

The measure has garnered its share of controversy, including a July Pima County Republican Party lawsuit questioning the petition’s signatures and collection forms. Additionally, Tucson’s mayoral candidates, all Democrats, fear financial retaliation from the state legislature if the measure is approved by voters in November.
