He fought the Nazis on D-Day to help liberate Europe. Now, France is thanking him with knighthood and an award.

TUCSON, AZ — A Tucson veteran of WWII was awarded France's prestigious Legion of Honor medal Thursday, making him a Chevalier, or a knight, of France. The award is the highest honor France offers to civilians and foreign nationals.
Margarito Ramirez, 99, was a private first class in the U.S. Army. He joined in 1942 and served all over Europe, including Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe, KGUN9 reported.
Ramirez landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day, one of the most important military operations in history. He was in the 47th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 5th Armored Division, KOLD reported.
