Tucson's Reid Park Zoo Reopens Friday

TUCSON, AZ — Reid Park Zoo in Tucson will reopen Friday after months of closure due to the coronavirus. But a trip to the zoo will look a little different these days.

The zoo has said it will open Aug. 28 with modified hours to help beat the summer heat until Sept. 30. The zoo will only be open from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. until then for "Wildlife Walks."

"The health of our guests, staff, and animals is our first priority, and we are pleased to offer a relaxing outdoor experience across 24-spacious acres," the zoo wrote on its website. "Thank you for your cooperation and helping to ensure your zoo can remain open while providing the opportunity to enjoy the mental and physical benefits of being outdoors and in nature."

Guests will have to keep several new safety precautions when planning their trip to Reid Park. Tickets must be reserved in advance at least one day before a visit (including zoo members), water fountains will be closed so guests are encouraged to bring their own water and face masks will be required. Some animals more susceptible to illness will have plexiglass barriers installed to keep them safe.

The zoo has also implemented social distancing and extra cleaning measures to keep guests safe. Interactive amenities and indoor areas will be unavailable. Food carts can be found around the zoo but cash payment will not be accepted.

But wildlife walks will give everyone a chance to meet Penzi the African elephant calf, who was born in April, around the same time as five meerkat pups — the first of their kind born at Reid Park Zoo.
