Walmart ‘Great Value’ Meats Sold In Tucson Might Have Salmonella

The USDA recently announced a recall of possibly-salmonella-tainted Walmart "Great Value" meat patties. Some were sold at Tucson stores.

TUCSON, AZ – George’s Prepared Foods, which packs ready-made meat products under Walmart’s "Great Value" brand, is recalling about 6,500 lbs of turkey sausage patty and pork sausage patty products that might have been tainted by salmonella, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food safety division recently reported. Some of the possibly contaminated product lots were sold at Tucson Walmart locations.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reported that the company informed them that a third-party cold storage facility had accidentally sent the possibly-salmonella-tainted meat products to stores.

Tucson residents should check their freezers and refrigerators for the questionable patties, manufactured April 19 and 27 and May 7 and 9, 2019. They are described as:

Those most vulnerable to salmonella are infants, anyone with a weakened immune system and older adults, all of which might be prone to developing a severe sickness after eating salmonella-tainted foods. Others who ingest salmonella and develop the "salmonellosis" illness usually fare better and don’t require medical treatment for the illness, which is typically active 4 to 7 days. Symptoms include abdominal cramps, diarrhea and fever with a typical onset of 12 to 72 hours after contaminated food was eaten. The USDA reports that salmonellosis is among the most common sicknesses caused by food bacteria, but adds that anyone who thinks they or a loved one has developed salmonellosis and needs medical attention should contact a health-care professional.

Anyone who finds any of these suspected food products in their home is advised to discard them or take them back to the store where they were purchased.
