On Jan. 18, 1971, Eastin phoned a friend to go shopping. Eastin was eyeing a new pair of boots at the local Mervyn's and had finally saved up enough money to buy them. The two pals headed off to the store, and Eastin made her purchase.

That night, as Eastin dropped off her friend, she said she was going to a car wash to clean the blue 1969 Ford Maverick she was driving. The vehicle belonged to Eastin's ex-boyfriend, who worked at a nearby Jack in the Box.

As it got late, friends and family became concerned about Eastin's whereabouts. No one had heard from her. A search was mounted, and the next morning the blue Maverick was found parked at the car wash located at 25400 Mission Boulevard. Eastin's purse was on the front seat of the locked vehicle.
