"The holidays should be a time of celebration, not tragedy," the CHP wrote on Instagram. "Let’s continue to prioritize safety and responsibility on the road."

As New Year's Eve approaches, the CHP has another two-day Maximum Enforcement Period planned.

Beginning at 6:01 p.m. on Tuesday, extra officers will be on the lookout for drivers impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. The enforcement period will run through 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday.

Last year over the New Year's enforcement effort, CHP officers made a staggering 892 DUI arrests statewide.

“Our officers are committed to working through the holidays to ensure everyone can reach their destinations safely,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Safe roads are possible when every driver makes responsible decisions behind the wheel.”
