CALIFORNIA — It is no secret that California has a particularly expensive housing market, but some of the Southland's price tags are hard to fathom.

Southern California led the country in high-priced home sales this year, with four cities making Forbes' list of most expensive sales of 2021 in the United States.

Malibu hosted the country's biggest home sale of the year when venture capitalist Marc Andreessen dropped $177 million on a seven-acre home with an ocean view. The property sits above Paradise Cove and has two guest houses, two barns, a stand-alone movie theater and a 10,000 square foot main house.

The second-most expensive house sale was not far from Andreessen's outrageous Malibu complex. In Bel Air, Coinbase chief executive officer Brian Armstrong put $133 million down on a 19,000-square-foot house with a five-bedroom guest house, according to Forbes. The property has a home theater, gym and spa.

Another Malibu sale took the No. 9 spot to the tune of $87 million when WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum bought a massive home from his next-door neighbor. Koum's second Malibu acquisition sat on a three-acre clifftop plot with an oceanfront cabana, Forbes reported. The seller, a new addition to the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Cast," moved on to Hidden Hills for $13 million.
