CA Among Costliest States For Health Care: Ranking
Emergency room visits in the Golden State are particularly costly, according to the study.
CALIFORNIA — California is among the five most expensive states for health care, according to a recent study.
To determine the priciest states, researchers for Overnight Glasses looked at the average costs of health insurance, an MRI, a CT scan, an emergency room visit and an eye exam, as well as health care spending per capita and dental exam prices. Composite scores were scaled to an index out of 100, and states were ranked, with a higher score indicating more expensive care.
The Golden State was fifth on the list with a score of 56.99, according to a news release about the ranking, which noted emergency room visits in California are particularly costly, averaging $3,238.

“For individuals navigating these costs, being proactive — like exploring insurance options, utilizing preventive care, and comparing healthcare providers — can make a big difference,” a spokesperson for Overnight Glasses said in the news release.
“As states continue to grapple with these expenses, there’s a clear need for innovative solutions that prioritize both access and cost-effectiveness to ease the financial burden on residents.”
