SACRAMENTO, CA — The California State Capitol reopened after being evacuated Friday morning, according to a memo obtained by Politico.
The memo from Lia Lopez, the Chief Administrative Officer of the Assembly, said that law enforcement had conducted "thorough assessment and sweep" of the Capitol and adjacent legislative office buildings, which were evacuated Friday morning following an email threat. The memo gave staff the option to return to their offices or continue working remotely.
A 9 a.m. memo from Lopez said that assembly members and staff were told to leave the Capitol and surrounding buildings and work remotely until the threat is under control, according to the Sacramento Bee. A similar memo was sent to state senators and their staff, according to Fox40 and the Sacramento Bee.
The California Highway Patrol Capitol Protection Section confirmed to KRCA and Fox40 that an email threat was received Friday morning, and multiple buildings were evacuated as a precaution, including the Capitol, a legislative building on O Street called the Swing Space that is temporarily housing the offices of the governor and lawmakers, and the Legislative Office Building.
The Legislature is on recess until Jan. 6 and Gov. Newsom, whose office was also evacuated, is in Los Angeles for the day, according to Politico.
