MERCED, CA — A California Highway Patrol officer recently pulled over a driver with a homemade license plate, according to authorities.

The agency's Merced office posted Friday on Facebook about the incident, explaining the officer stopped the Nissan Sentra after noticing something strange about the rear license plate.

"Upon closer look, it turned out to be handmade!" the Facebook post said. "While we appreciate the effort to stay compliant after losing the original plate, California law requires vehicles to display state issued plates only. If your plates are lost or stolen, you can easily get replacements through the DMV instead of breaking out the art supplies."
