In honor of Veterans Day, we’re taking a look at homelessness among veterans across the 50 states.

Homelessness among veterans appears to be slightly increasing in the majority of states, according to Data-Z.org. In 2020, there were an estimated 36,819 homeless veterans across the 50 states. This is a slight increase from 2019 when the estimated number of homeless veterans totaled 36,658.

California alone accounted for almost 31 percent of all homeless veterans with a total of 11,401 homeless vets. This is an increase compared to 2019 when California had 10,980 homeless veterans. On the contrary, South Dakota had the least amount of homeless veterans with only a total of 43 homeless veterans. This is a decrease from 2019 when the state had 66 homeless veterans.

Overall, the average number of homeless veterans per state was 727 in 2020. This is a small increase compared to 724 homeless veterans in 2019. While the country did see a small increase in 2020, the ultimate goal is to continuously lower these numbers.

To help honor veterans this year, consider donating or supporting organizations like Homes For Our Troops whose mission is to help connect severely injured post-9/11 veterans with specially adapted custom homes to enable them to rebuild their lives.
