- A California lawmaker is taking aim at self-checkouts at grocery and department stores. Under a bill introduced by Sen. Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, retailers would be prohibited from opening self-checkouts unless there's at least one human at a check stand, and self-checkouts would be limited to 15 items or less. The bill aims to address concerns about technology reducing retail jobs.
- The unemployment rate in California climbed to 5.5% in July, the highest nationally and the state's highest level since December. Despite a modest job gains, tech and white-collar sectors continue to remain soft.
