- A California lawmaker is taking aim at self-checkouts at grocery and department stores. Under a bill introduced by Sen. Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, retailers would be prohibited from opening self-checkouts unless there's at least one human at a check stand, and self-checkouts would be limited to 15 items or less. The bill aims to address concerns about technology reducing retail jobs.
