These 25 Retailers Are Among Thousands Of CA Stores Closing In 2025

There are 57 percent more store closings than there were one year ago, a retail tracking company revealed.

CALIFORNIA — Retailers with stores in California plan to close over 2,100 brick-and-mortar locations in the new year.

Coresight, which tracks retail trends, compared the number of closures and openings announced during 2024 and 2023 and found that major U.S. retailers announced 6.5 percent more openings and 57.3 percent more closures in 2024 than in 2023.

Big Lots and Party City were among those who announced closures in the final weeks of 2024. In light of these updates, Coresight's U.S. store closure and opening counts stood at 7,344 and 5,922, respectively.

As of Dec. 27, these 25 businesses were slated to close one or more locations in the coming year.

1. Big Lots and its 18 affiliates were set to close all existing stores across the United States because a buyer could not be found. The discount retailer had 844 stores slated for closure, including 109 in California, until a buyer stepped up and agreed to take on 200-400 Big Lots locations, The Associated Press reported in a Dec. 28 article. Big Lots auctioned or terminated the leases of 551 store locations following its decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sept. 9, 2024.

2. Macy's announced in February that it planned to close approximately 150 underperforming stores. Around 50 locations were set to close by the end of 2024, with the closures expected to continue in 2025 and into 2026. Macy's sought to prioritize investment in around 350 "go-forward locations" and the continued expansion of small-format stores. Macy's currently has 723 stores.


3. CVS Health is expanding its healthcare services and with that, the pharmacy giant has plans to close hundreds of stores over the next few years. In 2025, CVS will close stores in target areas with overlapping locations or low foot traffic. CVS has already closed 266 of its 7,248 stores with plans to close 320 more, according to a Dec. 27 report from Coresight.


4. Party City is going out of business, closing all 738 remaining stores —including 75 in California —plus more in other states, ending its 40-year reign as the go-to party supplier in the country, according to CNN reporters who viewed a Dec. 20 meeting of the company’s corporate employees. CEO Barry Litwin told corporate employees the company was “winding down” operations, and it was their last day of employment. Party City has closed 34 stores and will close all U.S. stores by late February 2025. The closures will be staggered, with most stores shutting down in January and February, according to Coresight's report. This announcement came after the retailer declared bankruptcy in January 2023. In 2024, Party City opened one store and closed 19.


5. Walgreens Boots Alliance announced in October that it would close 1,200 stores over the next three years. The drugstore chain plans to close 333 stores in 2025, according to Coresight's report. The chain currently has 8,492 U.S. stores. After the closures, the total number of stores will drop to 7,300. Walgreens aims to return to profitability and long-term growth, citing the closures as a necessary means to an end.


6. JC Penney plans to close one store in 2025. The department store currently has 663 locations.


7. Sears has about a dozen remaining stores in high-cost areas. It is rumored that the department store will see its final wave of closures in 2025.


8. Foot Locker announced in 2023 that it planned to close more than 400 low-performing stores in shopping malls through 2026. Foot Locker currently has 1,737 stores, with eight slated for closure in 2025. The footwear company said it would focus on better-performing locations and new concept stores outside of malls targeting niche consumers such as "sneakerheads," children and higher-income shoppers.


9. 7-Eleven plans to close 148 U.S. stores in 2025 and open 48 new stores. The convenience store chain currently has 13,145 locations.


10. Denny’s, the diner chain, previously announced its plan to close 150 stores in 2024 and 2025.


11. Best Buy plans to close 10–15 locations in 2025, according to reports.


12. Advanced Auto Parts announced it would close 700 locations by the middle of 2025. USA Today reported that the car parts supplier planned to introduce a new three-year financial plan to revive its struggling business.


13. Lumber Liquidators (LL Flooring) filed for bankruptcy protection in September, but then reversed course on store closures when it found a buyer for 219 stores. Some 211 stores were still slated for closure, The Associated Press reported.


14. Dollar Tree will close select underperforming locations in 2025. At the same time, it will open 60 more locations. It currently has a total of 19,726 stores.


15. Office Depot has been downsizing for years, and 2025 will see even more closures.


16. GameStop locations in smaller towns or declining malls will close in 2025. The company launched a plan to sell retro game consoles and games and is transitioning its in-store product selection to feature gaming merchandise like toys and shirts.


17. Nordstrom will close one store of 259.


18. Joann Fabrics will close several stores in 2025, according to reports.


19. Dick’s Sporting Goods plans to close 35 stores in locations including San Diego and Glendale, reports indicated.


20. UK-based WH Smith bookstore is slated to close seven U.S. stores in 2025.


21. Burlington plans to close three stores in 2025 but open 104 new stores. It currently has 939 stores.


22. Free People plans to close three of its 182 stores in 2025.


23. Urban Outfitters plans to close one of 181 stores.


24. Abercrombie & Fitch will close two of 687 stores.


25. Ross plans to close two of 2,112 stores in 2025.
