The increases are actually lower than the amount allowable in Waste Management Industries' contract with the city.
Based on its contract with the city created in 2016, Waste Management Industries is entitled to a cost increase based on the consumer price index, with a cap of a 3 percent annual increase. The increase is further capped by a clause in the contract that requires Agoura Hills' prices to remain competitive with neighboring cities.

Without the competitive price matching, residents would have generally seen an increase between 88 cents and up to $14.77 in their waste collection bills, based on service levels.
The city also agreed to extend Waste Management's existing contract for an additional four years. The contract began in 2016 and was set to expire in June 2023.
