700+ Stolen Cars Recovered In The East Bay, 355 Arrested
An ongoing operation led by the California Highway Patrol has successfully recovered hundreds of vehicles stolen in the East Bay.

OAKLAND, CA — A California Highway Patrol operation targeting car theft in the East Bay has recovered hundreds of stolen vehicles in recent months and dozens of guns linked to crime, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom's office.
Newsom announced a public safety surge in February, reporting 145 vehicles recovered and 71 arrests, during the first month. Sting operations in the months since have netted 726 stolen cars and 46 guns, resulting in 355 arrests, officials announced Wednesday.
"The ongoing crime suppression operation in Oakland and the East Bay is a testament to our unwavering commitment to enhancing public safety," said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. "By targeting high-crime areas and deploying additional resources, we are working with our law enforcement partners to reduce criminal activity and create safer communities throughout the region."
According to the governor's office, suspects arrested during the ongoing operation face an array of criminal charges, including car theft, transportation of drugs, DUI and felony gun possession. The focus on car thefts is one prong of a broader effort that includes targeting retail theft, cargo theft and violent crime. Last month, Newsom's office announced funding to create a network of nearly 500 new cameras in Oakland and throughout the East Bay.
