Alameda Files Charges In Attempted Car Theft Case

The crime happened last week according to records.

ALAMEDA, CA — Alameda Assistant City Prosecutor Montague Hung filed attempted car theft and resisting arrest charges Wednesday against Casey Curnutt.

"Community Safety has consistently been one of the City Council’s highest priorities," said City Attorney Yibin Shen. "City Prosecutors are committed to working collaboratively with our justice partners at the Alameda Police Department to protect public safety and safeguard victims’ rights in Alameda."

According to court records, Alameda Police officers were dispatched to Marina Drive on a vehicle theft in progress call at 5 a.m. on June 6.

Officers report that they saw Curnutt getting out of the victim’s vehicle. When the officers tried to take Curnett into custody, he fled on foot but was caught by pursuing officers, police reported.

A witness positively identified the defendant, according to the court records.

A search of the victim’s vehicle turned up evidence of burglary activity, including wires being cut below the steering column and burglary tools left behind.

"City prosecutors are dedicated to promoting and improving public safety and the quality of life in Alameda, through the fair, compassionate, and effective administration of justice," the City said in a statement.
