Alameda High Women's Tennis Sweep Individual 2024 WACC Championships

WACC Co-Player of the Year Award Winners Alice Chen and Juliana Johnson win Singles and Doubles, Johnson teaming with Sophie Featherstone

November 9, 2024, Hayward, CA -- It was a gratifying two days at Chabot College this Friday and Saturday for the Alameda High's Women's Tennis team. During opening ceremonies at the annual Individual WACC Tennis Championships on Friday, the team was given their WACC Championship pennant for winning the league, becoming the first Alameda women's team to do so. Alameda's 1-2 punch of Freshman Alice Chen and Senior Juliana Johnson shared the Player of the Year Award, with Abby Moore and Natalie Wong making All-League Doubles, and Renata Serna and Zoey Jalleh earning All-League Honorable Mention.

Chen went on to win 3 matches decisively, capturing the individual Singles title over Samantha Lopatin of Berkeley, 6-0 6-0. The duo of Johnson and Featherstone proved formidable, beating a team from Piedmont in the quarters, 6-2 6-0, another from Bishop O'Dowd in the semifinals, 6-1 6-0, and prevailing over another Piedmont combo, 6-1 6-3, in the Doubles final. Johnson's doubles win was the second of her career, having won the doubles as a freshman in 2021. Chen, Johnson and Featherstone earned automatic placement in the North Coast Section individual championships, which will take place at Chabot College on November 18 and 19.

Serna won three tough matches, only losing to Chen in the semis, to take third place in the tournament. Wong proved out her singles credentials, winning three matches to take fifth place. Moore and Jalleh rounded out Alameda's strong results, taking fourth place in doubles.

Next up is the NCS team championships, with first round play at Washington Park on Tuesday November 12 at 2:30pm, as the eighth seed versus ninth seed San Ramon Valley High.
