Alameda Women's Basketball Finish Week at 5-1 with Win Over Granada

Alameda Hornet student athletes have turned their focus to final exams this week, after a very busy three games-in-four-days stretch for the women's basketball team the previous week. The Hornets got off to good starts in all three games, and for the Amador Valley and Granada games, they were able to sustain their momentum and register comfortable wins. Senior Juliana Johnson had 17 and freshman Mia Borja had 15 against Amador Valley at home Wednesday, December 11, with the team racking up 30 rebounds and 18 steals over the course of the 56-27 victory, showcasing their intensity.

The Clayton Valley and Granada games were both played at Carondelet High School as part of their annual Tip Off Classic tournament. Alameda established a 33-20 halftime lead in Thursday's game against the Ugly Eagles of Clayton Valley, but despite a valiant effort and Johnson's 25 points, were unable to sustain their lead in the end. Clayton Valley started the second half strong, scoring ten unanswered points, but Alameda managed to hang tough for a 48-41 lead after three quarters. However, the depth and height of Clayton Valley finally proved too much, as they went on a 16-2 run to surge past the Hornets with 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter and then held off the Hornets for the 62-57 win. On Saturday, Alameda returned to winning form, as Granada was no match for Alameda's suffocating pressure defense with the Hornets racing out to a 38-12 lead at halftime. They cruised to a 58-40 win, posting an eye-popping 32 steals on the day.

With the fall semester over, Alameda resumes play with an away game against the College Park Falcons of Pleasant Hill on Saturday, December 21, at 4pm. The Junior Varsity kick off their game at 2:30pm. The Hornets return home on Monday, December 23, hosting the Mission San Jose Warriors with a 1:30pm tipoff, followed by the JV at 3pm, at the Alameda Gym. Tickets can be purchased at gofan.co.
