East Bay City Has The Best Food In The Country, Survey Finds

OAKLAND, CA — It's official: Oakland has the best food in the country, at least according to the Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Award.

Condé Nast Traveler is a lifestyle magazine that has been in publication since 1987 and has become a "global authority on luxury travel," according to its website. Each year, it publishes its Readers' Choice Awards survey, where hundreds of thousands of voters share their opinions on a variety of subjects, including hotels, cities and the best food around the world.

This year's awards saw more than 750,000 voters share their thoughts, including the best food cities in the United States.

Oakland took the top spot, with the magazine writing, "There's no wrong neighborhood from which to start exploring Oakland's staggeringly diverse food scene."

Voters emphasized Burdell, a soul food restaurant in the northern part of the city, Pizzailio on Telegraph Avenue and the Fruitvale neighborhood for its plethora of taco trucks, as some of the best places to eat across Oakland.

"The city also has a strong taproom and winery tasting room scene, making it easy to plan your entire visit around eating, drinking, or some combination of the two," according to Condé Nast Traveler.

Oakland wasn't the only Bay Area city on the list. San Francisco, which the voters shouted out for fresh seafood from Thanh Long or the clam chowder sourdough bread bowl at Boudin Bakery, was ranked No. 5 on the list.
