Moon Walk Anniversary Celebrated On U.S.S. Hornet

The U.S.S. Hornet in Alameda, where the astronauts returned, celebrated the moon landing's 55th anniversary.

ALAMEDA, CA — On Saturday, it was exactly 55 years since people first walked on the moon, and a celebration will be held at the U.S.S. Hornet in Alameda, which played a pivotal role in the splashdown.

The first moon walk was July 20, 1969, and when the Apollo 11 astronauts splashed down in the Pacific Ocean days later, the U.S.S. Hornet was their recovery ship. The day-long anniversary event took place at the U.S.S. Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum at 707 West Hornet Ave.

The first person on earth to greet the astronauts when they splashed down was on hand, according to organizers. Science nerds, space enthusiasts and history buffs - and the general public - were able to watch a robot competition, visit an Apollo exhibit and hear from Hornet crew members who were on board during the recovery.
