Oakland Airport Unveils First Renovated Restroom in Terminal 1

Two more projects are slated for completion this year.

OAKLAND, CA — Oakland International Airport (OAK) has opened the first completed restroom under its Terminal Restroom Renovation Program, marking a significant step in the airport’s ongoing modernization efforts. The newly upgraded men’s restroom at Gate 3 in Terminal 1 is designed to enhance the passenger experience with modern amenities and improved accessibility.

“We hope that passengers flying OAK enjoy the new and refreshed look of our restroom facilities. We look forward to more openings throughout 2025,” said Port of Oakland Director of Aviation Craig Simon.

The updated restroom features several improvements, designed with functionality, accessibility, and aesthetics in mind:

  • Spacious, ADA-compliant stalls provide extra room for luggage and include shelves for personal items.
  • Integrated LED occupancy indicators help travelers quickly identify available stalls.
  • Centralized sink areas with hands-free faucets, soap dispensers, hand dryers, and paper towels improve hygiene and convenience.
  • Energy-efficient LED lighting creates a bright yet calming atmosphere, complemented by sound-absorbing materials for noise reduction.
  • Enhanced entryway and signage improve wayfinding and create a welcoming experience for travelers.

Phase 1 of the renovation program, expected to cost $17 million, includes the restoration of a women’s restroom at Gate 4 and the conversion of a men’s restroom at Gate 7 into single-user family restrooms and a lactation suite for nursing mothers.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provided $10 million in grant funding for the project under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s 2024 Airport Terminal Program. The architect is HNTB Corporation, with Webcor Construction serving as the prime builder.

The restroom renovation is part of a broader effort to improve the passenger experience at OAK.

Additional projects include the construction of new restaurants and retail storefronts, as well as the replacement of Terminal 1’s check-in counters.

Details on Phase 2 of the restroom renovation project will be announced in Fall 2025, following the completion of Phase 1.
