Thanks to a $15,000 gift from the Oakland A’s, the Oakland Public Education Fund (“Ed Fund”) will purchase winter coats and jackets for Newcomer students attending Oakland public schools.

Newcomer students in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) are students who have been in the U.S. for less than three years and speak a language other than English at home. Many Newcomer students are fleeing violence, human trafficking, or persecution in their home country. They arrive in the United States and Oakland often after enduring arduous and traumatic journeys, and many arrive unaccompanied.

“This will be their (Newcomers) first time experiencing extreme cold and winter,” said Ivone Gutierrez, Elementary Newcomer Specialist for the OUSD Newcomer Program. “For our Newcomer students, we want to give the Oakland A’s huge appreciation for their generous contribution.”
