📰 News we're reading

1. Today's Alameda Treasure – 1724 Santa Clara Avenue, The Greenleaf House, Part 3 (alamedapost.com) — A beloved Victorian at 1724 Santa Clara Avenue has lived many Alameda lives, from Greenleaf family home to the Lona Hazzard School and later the Boy Scouts’ Stephens Center. This latest installment traces its tenants, city connections, and evolving community roles, setting up how Girls Inc. of Alameda would eventually become its next steward.

2. Merced College men's basketball facing some of state's best in Modesto tournament (mercedsunstar.com) — Alameda hoops fans may be interested that the College of Alameda men’s team, coached by NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton, is opening the Modesto Junior College tournament against Merced on Thursday night. The long-running event features some of California’s top junior college programs and runs through Saturday with games throughout each day.

3. Around the East Bay, cannabis drivers would take deliveries only to get a gun stuck in their faces (eastbaytimes.com) — Federal prosecutors say an Alameda couple is linked to a string of armed robberies targeting cannabis delivery drivers around the East Bay, with investigators finding marijuana products and a gun in their Alameda apartment. The alleged crew is accused of using delivery apps to lure drivers to Berkeley, Hayward, and San Leandro, then robbing them at gunpoint and taking both vehicles and cannabis.

4. This Bay Area county is experimenting with a first-in-the-state pilot program for faster housing construction. Can it help solve the affordability crisis? (eastbaytimes.com) — Alameda County is testing a first-in-California pilot to speed up and cut the cost of building small-scale affordable housing, using pre-approved designs and streamlined approvals. Officials hope the SHIFT program, which targets infill lots and middle-income residents, can trim about $250,000 per unit and eventually be replicated statewide. Local households in Alameda and nearby cities could benefit if the model scales.
