Scammers Posing As Police Prompt Warning In Alameda
Police officials said the scammers pretended to be investigating a fraud case in an attempt to access sensitive information.
ALAMEDA, CA — Reports of scam callers posing as Alameda police officers and detectives prompted a recent warning in Alameda.
According to officials, community members reported calls from people claiming to be from the Alameda Police Department, using the guise of a fraud investigation to solicit personal information.
Police said the scammers imply the person is either a victim or a potential suspect, claiming they can recoup their losses or eliminate themselves as a suspect by providing a photo of their driver's license or bank account information.

"We want to emphasize that the Alameda Police Department, and any law enforcement agency, will never request sensitive personal information over the phone during an unsolicited call," the department wrote on Facebook. "If you believe you are engaging in a possible scam call, do not provide any information and hang up."
